Travel Guides? I'm looking for a 2008 New York City travel guide. Does anyone have any suggestions on one? Also, what is your opinion of the Frommer's, Fodor's, or DK travel guides?
Travel guides...? What type of information do you or would you like to see in a travel guide aside from dining and lodging facilities and well-known tourist attractions?
Are travel guides helpful or do they just narrow our experience of a different culture? I wanted to ask this question because I feel that travel guides often make sweeping generalisations and stereotypes about people, culture and society, preempting preconceived ideas about a potential destination. I often see other travellers in a cafe for example, reading their guide book rather than actually experiencing the holiday they are having. I find this confusing. Are travel guides just a money making scheme written by people who don't know the truth about a country, or do they have a genuine benefit to travellers and destinations alike?
How do I create maps to put in travel guides? I am creating custom travel guides for clients and would like to create small maps to include in these guides--5x7 size maps of specific locations around the world. Like those that you see in Fodor's, Frommers, and other such guides. I want to be able to create walking tour maps, maps that have major tourist spots, etc.
Where can I get Travel guides that I can Download ? I'm Travelling South East Asia, Oz, Fiji, Hawaii and LA. I would like to have travel guides that I can put on to my Ipod instead of books when travelling due to weight and space. Any suggestions? Free would be great but not the determining factor. Thanks I am looking for files that I can read like a book as opposed to any type of audio tour guide
Which are the best travel guides for Philadelphia are? I am planning to spend 6 days in the Philadelphia area (Philadelphia, Amish county and Hershey) and I am not sure which is the best travel guide for the area or if you have any suggestion for my trip (best itineraries, things to do, etc.)
How can I make my own maps for travel guides? I have a travel website and I want to make maps of cities. Nothing too detailed just something that would help travelers find places of interest... I know about google maps but I want to have my own maps that I own the copyright to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Can anyone suggest any package tours or tourist guides for travel in thailand? My family and I are travelling to Thailand on the 15th of October. We want to make the most of our trip there. However, we are only going there for 7 days. My parents believe that we can travel the country properly if we have a tourist guide with us or if we are part of a package tour. Then we can actually visit places without having our money wasted. At the same time, we also want to do shopping. If anyone could suggest some package tours or tourist guides which are affordable, it would be great.
Are there any guides to travel in Greece? I want to go to Greece in 2nd week of July. Where can I find guides for Athens, Santorini and Mikonos? Also, where can I find the best and economical places to stay? I want to travel via ferry from Santorini to Mikonos, is there any guide for that?

I want to go to New Zealand. Are there local guides that travel with you to show you around? How do I contact? There are two people in my party. We want a more interactive experience so we thought a local guide would be better. We aren't sure we want to drive ourselves, so we are looking for a guide that travels with you on your journeys. Someone who can show the whole of the country, while avoiding the big "tourist trap" group tour feel. The culture and history are important to our experience but overall we are looking for a more intimate fun trip. Any names and/or contact information would be appreciated. Thanks!
Who makes the best travel books/guides? I'm planning a European trip and hope to do some reading and research beforehand. Who makes the best books or guides? Lonely Planet? Fodor's? Frommer's? Others? Or are there specific ones that are better?
Know of any travel guides about backpacking in france? See, My family and I want to go to france, but we're on a very tight budget. I know I've seen books for people like me, books with information on hostels and cheaper alternatives, etc. If you know of any that you've had good experiences with or your friend has or whatever that would be fantastic! Thank you!!
Do Time Out travel guides differ that much from edition to edition? I have a Time Out Berlin guide for my upcoming trip there. I just found out that they have a 2009 edition. The one I have is the edition right before that one, the 2006 edition. Do you think I should buy the updated one, or do they not really differ that much? I think they update them every two years, but whether or not the information is much different, I don't know. I would imagine they can't be that different, but what do you think? Thanks :)
China: the distinction between guides and travel companions? I suspect I know the answer to this, but can somebody let me know for sure. I am looking for a guide when I go to China in early 2008. Some internet sites have guides. Other sites have people they call "travel companions." These travel companions are almost always young women, college-age or just a little older, and they are usually quite well-dressed, well-groomed, and beautiful. They look more ready to attend a cocktail party than hike the Great Wall. My suspician is that these "companions" are not just guides; I can't think of how to put that more delicately. I do not want to make arrangements expecting one experience and being offered quite a different one! If anybody can clear this up for me, thank you.
Any suggestions on a good travel guide for the Riviera Maya? My boyfriend and I are going to the Mayan in a month and I want to do some research before leaving. There are many travel guides and am looking for some recommendations on one that will explain various hot spots and types of excursions to take. I want to get the most out of my vacation.
What is considered to be the first travel guide book? I'm not talking about Victorian era, I'm wondering way back in history if there is evidence of Arabic or Chinese or Indian travel guides and what their context is (written by a holy man or explorer or merchant perhaps?) Thanks
What is the best travel guide in your opinion?? I've traveled all over and relied mostly on Lonely Planet; but a few years ago, in New York, I walked 2 miles to find a restaurant that was not there. I've heard of similiar experiences about Lonely Planet from others. I still trust Lonely Planet, and it is still my favorite (because all travel guides will have flaws), but what would you call best?

Anyone who toured Bangkok without joining tourist/travel guides? I intend to travel Bangkok, Thailand this coming May/June 2007. We'll stay there for about 3-5 days only. I'll be with my cousins and a brother who's just 11 yrs. old. Obviously, i would want to know places there which are "family-friendly" to travel. Aside from that, we don't plan on visiting any beach because we're staying for a few days only. We''ll also travel without any tour guide touring us around. Is it fine to travel by ourselves? Plus, what modes of transportation would be easy and accessible to reach tourist destinations in Bangkok? Thanks!
What is the best travel guide about the Galapagos? My friend and I are going to the Galapagos in six weeks. I've rented all of the videos that Netflix has, but I'd like to get a great travel guide as well. Any thoughts about which one would be the most helpful?
How do you become a travel guide? Next year I'm moving to Spain and i want to become a travel guide. I know Spanish and English and I want to take English speakers around Spain and show them places. I could also translate for them and help them get around. I'm a new travel agent but thats what I exclusively want to do. Do I have work for a travel agency to do this or what? I'm lost, please help.
What is the best travel guide for Thailand? I'm English, and going to Thailand with a friend in June. We're female, and 20 years old - both students, so as you can imagine we're trying to do this on a budget! I can't decide on which travel guide is right.
What would you like to see in an online travel/city guide? I am making an online website that's a travel/city guide to a pretty big city (think San Francisco-like, but not New York or London or anything THAT big). Besides the usual, attractions, restaurant listings, information on public transit, the like, what would YOU want to see? It's just one city. It's not like Fodor's or Frommer's where I have travel guides to all the cities in the world, just one city. So I need reasons on the website for people to visit. Thanks!
